A Recycling Event Held by Southeastern Illinois College

Recycling Event
An event to recycle old electronics

So far, the college has managed to collect about 5000 pounds of recyclable electronic items within the campus itself.

The list of materials that could be gathered for recycling included computers, laptops, monitors, LCDs, fax machines, printers, mobile phones, cables, electrical devices, routers, servers, racks, lab test equipments, consumer electronic goods, televisions, switches, medical electronic equipments, speakers, and almost anything that had a cord.

The materials that would not be a part of the recycling goods were ovens, loose batteries, UPS, acid batteries, florescent lights, vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, dishwashers, scrap steel, wood, plastic, paper, or aluminum cans.

To relieve congestion that could arise from the traffic, the participants who would be bringing the items were requested to enter the campus through Muddy Road. The unloading process was to take place in the lower level of North C Parking which is located five miles from Harrisburg.

The closest recycling facility for electronic goods in Harrisburg is located at some distance from the campus. So the drive organized by the college was a convenient setup for students and nearby residents. The community was encouraged by the students to take part in this open-to-all initiative. Program co-coordinator, Greg McCulloch, even proposed to make this event an annual affair.

The College promoting recycling and use of eco friendly promotional items

Educational institutions need to focus on environmental awareness programs as a part of their curriculum. South eastern Illinois College promoted the concept of recycling in addition to the use of eco friendly promotional items, by which the students and the people from the nearby community were made aware of how they could contribute toward helping the environment.

Recycling is a very good cause, and if young adults are taught about it early in life, they can definitely help in conserving the natural resources. Just like the South eastern Illinois College, the Boston College also emphasizes on environment awareness programs and observes Earth Day every year without fail. This initiative was started few years back to create awareness about the environmental issues such as energy conservation, recycling, pollution, etc. within the campus.
