Candidates Get Creative with Green Energy Ideas

RecycleCandidates competing for the mayor’s position in Vineland, New Jerseyare all supporting green initiatives in the city. They all agree that eco-friendly measures are practical and long-term investments. The elections are scheduled for the 6th of November.

Ideas from the contestants

Mayor Robert Romano, who is hoping for being re-elected, stated that investment that the city made in solar farms over the last four years has been pretty fruitful. His campaign’s slogan is ‘Proven Progress.’ Romano added that solar energy initiative is a part of a 10 year plan, which is in its first stages right now. Solar is great for the community and a few months ago the Vineland Municipal Electric Utility received an award from the Electric Power Association.

Another candidate, Perry Barse feels that although encouraging eco-friendly promotional items and methods are great for the community, it does come with challenges. Barse thinks the city should think about making a move towards natural gas for their vehicles. Doing this could not only save the environment but also considerably cut costs.

Candidates for sustainable practices like seed paper usage

Ruben Bermudez, another candidate stated it is vital for the city to consider every single opportunity that could lower their carbon foot print as the natural environment is extremely precious. Bermudez was formerly a City Council president and has plans to conserve energy, promote green technology, reduce solid waste and use sustainable practices.

Candidate David W. Mazur stated there is a lot more that can be done in terms of going green. He stated that a lot can be done in terms of working arrangements for employees that will promote green practices like working from home whenever possible. Alternative working arrangements should be provided by the city. It will not only help the environment but also keep the employees productive.

Moving to electronic invoices is much better than printing. Employees should be encouraged to shut equipment down when they are not being used, and alternatives like seed paper and reusable totes should be encouraged.

Other alternatives are biodiesel and ethanol. Eventually these alternatives will be cheaper and also generate high employment in the city. Long term saving of fuel will be possible and maybe even tax breaks. For delivery of products hybrid vehicles are a great option as these come in environmentally friendly models, which will also end up saving money in the long run.
