Cities Continue Banning Plastic Bags; Solana Beach Takes the Lead

banAs the world continues to strive towards making the Earth a better place to live in, cities are enforcing bans against the use of plastic bags. Solana Beach became the first San Diego city to take a leap into the eco-friendly cities sphere. Plastic or paper is no longer the widely asked question in this city.

Use reusable and seed paper bags instead

Since Thursday, usage of plastic bags was permanently banned in this coastal city. Authorities suggested the people to use their own bags or go in for seed paper bags. Shoppers can no longer ask for plastic bags as they are completely removed from retail stores and supermarkets. The coastal city instead, offers its citizens a variety of paper and cloth reusable bags, for which they will have to pay 10 cents.

Even though plastic bags are banned, the resident say they still need them for purposes like picking up after their pets. The residents are still getting used to the transition and are making a visible effort by using bags that are legal and handmade reusable bags.

Retailers a little unhappy about having to pay for seed paper bags

Many of the residents decided to bring their own bags as they didn’t want to pay the extra amount for each bag. The plastic bags can still be used to carry meat, produce and exempt in supermarkets. Carrying dry cleaning and newspapers in plastic bags is also permitted according to the new Solana Beach law. Although, the shoppers weren’t all that thrilled when they found out that they have to pay for handmade and paper bags.

The residents were found complaining that they are charged for their groceries already and don’t see why the bags need to be charged as well. Even though the idea of using wholesale reusable bags by citizens is gaining popularity, the aspect of paying money for them is slowing down the gain of popularity.  City manager of Solana Beach however, said that the people will slowly get used to the transition from plastic to paper.

Even though there is an obvious effort the people will have to go through, the transition will be quite rewarding in the long run. The city offered all the citizens and residents free reusable totes on Lomas Santa Fe, outside Von’s store. Looking at the initiative taken by Solana Beach to protect the environment otherSan Diegocities are also planning to pass the same ‘ban plastic bags’ law.
