Targeting the recycling of demolition and construction debris in Cook County, Illinois, the Board of Commissioners passed an ordinance recently. The ordinance called the Demolition Debris Diversion ordinance was passed by the members of the Board, requesting the demolition contactors to recycle almost seventy percent of the debris that is collected in all their demolition projects.
Cook County choose the third ‘r’
Demolition contractors stationed in the unincorporated and suburban Cook County will have to follow this ordinance. Even the residential properties are supposed to show at least five percent of debris being diverted for recycling and reuse.
Garages and sheds are the only structures that are excluded from paying following this ordinance. While most of the states are banning plastic bags and initiating usage of wholesale reusable bags, the state of Illinois is practicing the third ‘r’ of reduce, reuse and recycle.
Apart from using wholesale reusable bags, reduce pollution by recycling
The ordinance will go into effect starting November 21st, 2012 and is considered to be a part ofCookCounty’s Sustainability Initiative started by the President, Toni Preckwinkle.
When her administration started, Toni launched the initiative with the aim of reducing pollution levels, energy consumption and helping to create sustainable communities. By following the ordinance, the County will move a step closer to achieve the zero-waste status, which the Board hopes to achieve.
Recycling C&D waste
If the construction contractors actually follow the rule by recycling the demolition and construction debris,Cook County will be a step closer to a greener place. Apart from creating positive environmental impacts, the recycling reform will also create jobs and help in stabilizing the local economics. Recycling the debris will also create materials for renovation, construction and infrastructure-building.
When at least five percent of the demolition debris is recycled from thirty houses, the process can support at least 1 new retail center, which can provide almost five people with jobs and thirty workers with full-time construction. The ordinance can be directly enforced as it comes under the permit of the Environmental Control, within the suburban Cook County.
Chicago also needs the recycling of construction and demolition materials. At present, the contractors end up salvaging a significant amount of demolition materials from sites and the reuse and recycle requirement in this region is groundbreaking.
