Dallas Still Debating on Plastic Bag Ban

Dallas City Council is still debating on a plastic bag ban, an idea that was introduced by the Quality of Life Committee in March of this year. City governments across the nation are beginning to understand the importance of reducing pollution, most notably due to plastics. In response, a number of cities have imposed plastic bag bans, eliminating the use of single-use plastic bags in favor of recycled reusable bags.

Proponents of the ban say that it will be the first in many steps taken to reduce pollution, expecting it to lead to further initiatives. If passed, Dallas would join a growing list of cities and towns that have already banned the use of single-use plastic shopping bags.

Those who are against the ban have said that it is not a comprehensive environmental protection plan, and that it will not make much of a difference in the overall health of the area. Some people argue that the bag bans hurt business and they simply don’t want to give up the convenience of single-use bags.

Consumers against the banning of single-use bags cite health concerns of the recycled reusable bags. Studies have shown that reusable bags can carry viruses and bacteria. Those same studies show that proper storage and cleaning the bags after each use will eliminate the cross contamination and spread of germs.

Officials have noted that deliberators are seeking a compromise, potentially in the form of a plastic bag fee, which would require consumers to pay a small tax to use plastic bags. Many consumers don’t like the idea of paying for the single-use bags on top of already paying for the items in the bags.
