A Day in the Life of a Plastic Bag

Hi! I’m your friendly neighborhood grocery store plastic bag. I like long walks to the car, and I enjoy helping people carry things from the store to their homes. While I enjoy helping people, once they’re done with me I usually get thrown in the garbage can. Just because I am called a disposable bag, it doesn’t mean that is how to handle me. There are so many ways to keep me out of a landfill, where I don’t belong.

Once you get me home, reuse me as much as possible. I can come in handy for a number of other uses. I’ll line your bathroom wastebasket, I fill plant containers and I’m good at carrying dirty soccer cleats. Take me with you to the beach, the library or the amusement park for the day. As long as you clean and dry me, you can recycle me later.

Did you know if you bring me back to your grocery store or retailer then they may recycle me for you? While it’s true most curbside recycling bins don’t want me, I am recyclable. I can be made into crates, containers, fencing, construction materials such as composite lumber, exterior moldings, door and window frames and even new bags.

So remember, don’t put me in your curbside recycling bin, and NEVER put me in your garbage can. If I do end up in your garbage bin I could be deposited in a landfill, or worse, float away and land in a clean ecosystem. I don’t want to harm the environment, but I do. Help me help the environment and deposit me in your local grocery store’s recycling bins once you are finished using me.
