According to NYT datelined April 24, 2013, the biggest recycling effort over the last 25 years has just kicked off with the welcoming news that all hard plastic objects are included under the city’s recycling program. The effort may see waste of over 50,000 tons being disposed in landfills annually. Additionally, the city might have a huge savings of over $850,000 in disposal fees. New Yorkers will hopefully promote recycling efforts more enthusiastically with a simplified recycling system for plastics.
The upgraded recycling system in New York
The New Yorkers may no longer need to puzzle over whether small or big waste plastic containers need to be thrown away in the recycle bin or trash. The newly announced recycling program at the city will accept plastic of every size. Countless toys and objects, apart from cloth hangers and shampoo bottles, will now be disposed in a single bin. According to Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, any plastic, no matter how rigid it is, will be recycled. This would allow a huge quantity of waste to be diverted from landfills.
The amount of waste diverted can easily fill a football field that is as high as seven stories. The changes in the recycling system will be implemented when the largest recycling plant for households opens by the end of the year, at SunsetPark in Brooklyn, North America. Sims Municipal Recycling will be operating the system. It is expected that the transportation cost incurred in bringing products to the recycling center will be highly reduced. The effort is expected to drastically reduce the city’s carbon footprint.
Benefits of promoting custom printed totes and upgrading the recycling system
While the new plastic recycling system will attract New Yorkers to recycle more, paper waste can be recycled to promote custom printed totes. This will drastically cut down the carbon footprint in the city. Many people currently don’t recycle because it is rather complicated to separate the plastic stuff. The new upgraded system will encourage recycling among the residents.
A 2008 study found recycling to be costlier by $17 a ton in comparison to trash disposal, but the gap is increasingly narrowing. The cost takes into account extra trucks, fuel, and other costs including crews. The expansion is likely to save money eventually when recycling trucks begin operating at their maximum efficiency. New Yorkers will soon receive mails explaining what can possibly be recycled and what can be excluded from recycling.
