Oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle Comes to Santa Cruz

On February 16, 2012, at 7:30 p.m., at the UC Santa Cruz Music Recital Hall, Dr. Sylvia Earle will present the sixth Fred Keeley Lecture on Environmental Policy.  Sylvia Earle is an accomplished American oceanographer that has been educating the public since the 1960’s.  On this lecture, her topic will be “Oceans, Life, and Survival” .  The event is free to the public and parking is available for $3.00.

The Keeley Lecture series was formed in 2003 in honor of Fred Keeley, a Santa Cruz County civic leader and former member of the State Assembly.  For many years, he helped shape environmental policy in California as The State Assembly fosters discussions and awareness of major environmental challenges and the role of environmental policy in reaching solutions.

Beginning in 1955, Sylvia received a B.S. degree from Florida State University,  a M.S. in 1956 and a Ph.D. in 1966 from Duke University.  She was Curator of Phycologyat the California Academy of Sciences from 1979–1986 and a Research Associate at the University of California, Berkeley from 1969–1981.  From 1967 to 1969, she was also a Radcliffe Institute Scholar and Research Fellow or Associate at Harvard University from 1967–1981.  Today, Earle serves as an explorer in residence at the National Geographic Society. In 2011, she received an honorary doctorate from Smith College, and delivered the commencement address at Warren Wilson College.  Her accomplishemnts are many, and she has authored more than 125 publications concerning marine science and technology throughout the years.

Members from Save Our Shores, an environmental advocacy group in Santa Cruz, California, will be attending the lectures and is helping to promote the event.  Save Our Shores is active in the Monterey Bay area with beach clean ups, policy advocacy and educating the public on the importance of taking care of our precious resource, the ocean.

Save Our Shores helped to pass the plastic bag ban in Santa Cruz county by speaking out at city council meetings, handing out free reusable shopping bags to the community, educating the public on the wastefulness of single use plastic bags, and many other environmentally proactive activities.
