Phoenix Lawmaker Introduces New Bill for Green Cleaning

Promotional ItemsArizona Senator Ed Ableser, D-Tempe, has authored a bill (SB 1072) which would take great strides towards making school districts and charter schools more green with their choice of cleaning products. The state lawmaker maintains that requiring schools to switch to eco-friendly cleaning products would promote the safety and health of school children. This new bill comes right off of the heels of several pieces of legislation passed at different cities around the United States to ban plastic bags and promote the use of reusable grocery bags.

The motivation behind the bill makes a lot of sense. Choosing green cleaning products is a great idea for everyone and the environment. Changing to more environmentally friendly cleaning products would cut down on chemical pollution and eliminate the resulting health risks.

Eco-friendly cleaning products are not only a better choice for the environment but for personal health as well. The processing, use and improper disposal of chemical-filled cleaning products can be toxic to humans and wildlife. These chemicals can poison the water supply, ruin animal habitats and pollute the air we breathe.

Green cleaning products have become more readily available and affordable in recent years as more and more emphasis has been put on finding alternatives to harsh chemical-filled products. Green cleaning products use many common naturally derived ingredients such as baking soda, non-GMO cornstarch, vinegar, essential oils, lemons and limes that are safe for personal use and for the environment. Under Ableser’s bill the Department of Education and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality would decide what cleaning supplies would be acceptable.

Another part of the bill would make it necessary for school districts, community colleges, universities and state agencies to purchase at least 10 percent of their energy from green sources. These energy sources include water, wind and the sun. It would be one step towards helping to cut down on the US’s dependence on non-renewable fossil fuels as an energy source.
