Results of Eco friendly ‘Green Tech’ Course Announced

Green TechJulee Herdt, a professor at the University of Colorado gave an interesting assignment to her students of building architectural pieces from furniture. This course titled ‘Green Tech’ required the students to make use of scrap for building the pieces. The students were specifically instructed not to buy any materials for building their project and use only scrap instead.

Greenery with Green Tech

The students completed the project exclusively with the help of scraps that they found in salvage yards or alleyways. There were also a few cases where students felt the need to buy some stuff for their project. Such students were allowed to make minimal purchases from thrift shops.

The students delivered their best in the course by creating many rustic projects combined with contemporary designs. The projects included a floor lamp that was partially made with rusted gears taken from an abandoned farm tool, a seesaw, and a table made with metal fillings taken from a recycled plank. One of the students used a repurposed industrial cart wheel from the 1920s along with donated oak lumber and scrap metal to make a beverage cart.

The students came up with many eco friendly projects with different designs, all of which were displayed at a modern furniture shop named ‘Design Within Reach’ located at downtown Boulder. The project was judged by the professionals of Design Within Reach. The first prize went to Josh Arndt who reinvented a seesaw. To make his project, Josh made use of salvaged steel plate which he welded and bent to make the fulcrum of the seesaw. For making the seats, he restored a worn-out pine beam.

Making a difference with eco friendly promotional items

Herdt said that the main intention of the course was to teach students to restore and make the best use of existing resources. She has been teaching her students to investigate original discarded materials and find beauty as well as potential in them. In this way, she inspires her students to get more creative while discovering a new way of using waste and scrap. She has been educating the students about this course since 1996.

Kevin Brooks, who is the studio proprietor of the store also judged the project. Kevin helps students in learning the art of marketing their creations. He said that his customers were enamored with the creativity of the students.

Students who frequently participate in the Green Tech course get to sell their architecture projects and art made from eco friendly promotional items at the store. The amount collected from the project is then donated to charities.
