Save Our Shores To Hand Out Reusable Grocery Bags in Santa Cruz County

Save Our Shores, located in California, is a community leader in  marine environment issues including ocean awareness, advocacy and citizen action.   Their core initiatives are plastic pollution clean up, clean boating, and ocean health.

Over the last 30 years, Save Our Shores has accomplished many positive environmental outcomes.  For example, they were instrumental in establishing the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.  The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is a federally protected marine offshore area stretching from Marin to Cambria.  The MBNMS has a shoreline length of 276 miles and 6,094 square miles of ocean and supports one of the world’s most diverse marine ecosystems.

SOS has also fought hard to prevent offshore oil drilling and most recently, successfully stopped cruise ship dumping off the shores of California. SOS Sanctuary Stewards are regularly seen throughout the community doing beach clean ups and educating the public about ways to help keep the coastline clean.

In fact, SOS was instrumental in the passing of the recent plastic bag ban in Santa Cruz County, which is scheduled to take effect in all retail outlets, except restaurants, in unincorporated Santa Cruz County, on Tuesday, March 20, 2012.  To help the community get ready for the ban, Save Our Shores and the County of Santa Cruz are going to distribute free reusable grocery bags to shoppers and educate them of the benefits of using reusable grocery bags.
