Save the Plastic Bag Coalition Taking Action Against Plastic Bag Bans

custom reusable bagsSave the Plastic Bag Coalition said it would ask the First District California Court of Appeal to overturn a bag ban in unincorporated areas of Marin County, California.  The ban is to formally begin in January 1, 2012.  In the Marin County ban, there is a paper bag tax if customers choose paper bags, but Marin County would prefer it’s residents bring their own reusable shopping  bags.

Huntington Beach is also discussing a plastic bag ban, but due to the action being taken by SPBC, Huntington Beach is going to have an Environmental Impact Report completed before moving forward with the ban, which is what SPBC wants to have happen before a bag ban can be passed by any county.  However, the EIR’s are costly, so county’s are accepting private donations to help pay for the EIR’s.

According to The Orange County Register, the Huntington Beach City Council voted 4-3 yesterday to pay Rincon Consulting nearly $30,000 to prepare an environmental impact report for the proposed ban.

Another plastics company, Hilex Poly Co. LLC is also  moving forward with a  lawsuit against the County of Los Angeles in response to a ban on plastic bags and a tax on paper bags.

It may become more costly, and a little slower, for more counties to move forward with plastic bag bans if plastics companies are going to sue them for such bans.  However, the EIR’s are expected to solidly support the benefits of using eco friendly reusable bags over single use plastic bags as a better alternative for our environment.
