US Residents Encouraged to Use Reusable Bags and Bamboo Totes

eco friendly bagsClose to a billion plastic films and single-use plastic bags were collected at recycling centers in the US in the year 2011. These figures suggest that the recycling rate has substantially increased in the country, especially in the past two years.

The increasing awareness on recycling

Experts feel that over the years, the city councils have made efforts to increase the recycling rates within their premises. In the year 2005, the recycling rate within the country was only 652.4 million pounds, and at present, these figures have increased by an approximate 50 percent margin.

The increase in recycling rates can be attributed to the increase in awareness among the residents. According to the Executive Director of the Californians Against Waste, Mark Murray, there are two good things that can be interpreted through the increase in recycling rates: firstly, the increased awareness among the residents, and secondly, the fact that a lot of the domestic waste is recycled within the country at present, instead of being shipped out overseas.

Nonetheless, Murray feels that the country still has a lot more recycling potential, and through strategic planning, a lot of the resources can be recycled to be used in industries and in domestic spaces. As a matter of fact, Murray feels that the domestic recycling potential of the country has still not been explored to its fullest.

The role of reusable bags like bamboo totes on the recycling rates

Even though the city councils in a lot of the regions in the US have made reusable bags such as cloth totes, custom printed totes, and bamboo totes compulsory, there are close to 15,000 locations where the residents can dispose their plastic bags and get them recycled as well. In most cases, these recycling centers are either grocery or retail chains that can reuse these bags for their stores.

According to the Vice President of ACC, even though reusable bags have been introduced in the US market, a lot of the residents still prefer to use plastic bags. So the stores have to establish facilities in order to recycle these plastic bags. He feels that all the stores can work together in order to recycle the plastic films and plastic bags they receive from the customers, and he thinks that in the coming 10 years, the US will have a more organized recycling system.
