2012 Olympics: Not To Be Plastic Bag Free

Despite the efforts of Boris Johnson, The Mayor of London, environmental group Greener Upon Thames, and support from 90% of Londoners, Olympic organizers have so far refused to ban plastic bags at the 2012 London Olympics, not good news.  As of August, 2011, London Olympic Organizers have pledged only to ban single use plastic bags in their own shops, and will not enforce a wider ban on their suppliers and partners throughout London.

Greener Upon Thames launched a petition to ban plastic bags at the 2012 Olympics in November of  2010 and has been in consultation with London Olympics Head of Sustainability, David Stubbs, Shaun McCarthy, Chair of the Commission for a Sustainable London 2012 and the Greater London Authority. With 8 million ticket sales, it is feared the Olympic games will add millions of plastic bags onto streets and landfills.

However, there is still time to sign the petition for a plastic bag free 2012 Olympics.  Reusable shopping bags are a much better alternative.  Eco friendly reusable bags made of Jute or Bamboo are 100% biodegradable and can be used over and over again.  Reusable recycled bags made of 100% post-consumer recycled material can also be used for multiple purposes and last for years with regular use.
