Celebrating Textile Recycling

Recycled tshirt  On the occasion of America Recycles Day, Community Recycling, Military Order of the Purple Heart, and DonateStuff.com had teamed up together to promote awareness among the public on textile recycling. The day is dedicated to celebrating and promoting recycling initiative and household goods, shoes, and clothes are added to list of things to be recycled. On this day, Houston’s residents could stop by at any of the 30 donation centers to contribute cloth and household good recyclables. A raffle contest with a prize of an iPad had also been arranged for the residents.

Companies involved in the initiative

Community Recycling is a company that distributes unwanted textiles to different parts of the US for reusing and recycling purposes. The company believes that it is important to engage the communities where it does business for easing the recycling process.

Military Order of the Purple Heart is an organization that provides comfort and help to the homeless and those needy for employment assistance. DonateStuff.com facilitates conversion of discarded trash into worthy products. The site is connected to charities were people are in need of clothes and household goods and they supply them with the collected materials.

Converting cloth into eco friendly promotional items

Donated household goods and clothes have been put into productive use since many years. Textile recycling significantly benefits the environment; reusing and recycling saves energy and water, reduces greenhouse effects and lessens water, air/solid waste pollution.

It is estimated by the EPA that nearly 70lbs of textiles are discarded by each person in the US. Items like clothes, bags and shoes are dense and consume a lot of landfill space.

The goal of the companies was to celebrate America Recycles Day by reducing as much as possible goods and clothes from landfills.

DonateStuff.com and PurpleHeart were excited to educate the residents on textile recycling which would support the companies’ mission to provide resources and services to the community. It was also an opportunity to break the conventional thought of considering only aluminum, paper and plastic as recyclables.

The discarded textiles were collected to be recycled into wholesale reusable bags and other eco friendly products. Having partnered with Military Order of the Purple Heart, Community Recycling is confident of taking the recycling initiative to a higher level.

The business brought in a lot of money and diverted large quantities of discarded textiles from landfills. It has also generated job opportunities in several sectors.
