All about ‘Free Bag Friday’

According to studies, approximately twenty billion single-use plastic bags are used in California every year. Many of these bags end up in dumping grounds or are found scattered around the place or in water bodies, affecting the natural balance of the environment and causing harm to our wildlife.

In order to curb the damage that is being caused by plastic bags, San Mateo County has banned the use of plastic bags. However, the San Mateo County Health System does not believe in simply preaching about the use of reusable bags. It believes that actions speak louder than words. As a result of this, they have decided to distribute reusable bags, free of cost, to all the residents of San Mateo.

The bags are available in two designs – a small, dark green bag that rolls up and a larger, flat one that is a lighter shade of green. In order to get of this fabulous offer, the residents have to simply send an email to rmelia@smcgov.org stating which bag they would like. Residents who share the relevant post on the Health System’s Facebook page with their friends are eligible for a second free reusable bag.

South San Francisco, San Mateo, San Carlos, San Bruno, Redwood City, Los Gatos, Los Altos, Daly City, East Palo Alto, Foster City, Cupertino, Colma, Campbell, and Burlingame, among many others are in agreement with San Mateo County. They have joined hands with the San Mateo County Health Services to ban the use of plastic bags through a regional approach.

Reusable recycled bags totes to carry the message

Plastic bags are not biodegradable. They break down into small particles and contaminate soil and water. Disposable bags have a similar effect on the environment as they take ages to decompose. In order to avoid these problems, many cities are trying to ban the use of such bags.

Reusable recycled bags and totes are a better alternative since they are durable and they generally last for a minimum of 75 uses. In addition to reducing the constant demand for new bags, these bags help in conserving energy and raw materials since they are made with recyclable material. These bags can go a long way in preserving the environment.
