Portland, Oregan Plastic Bag Ban In Effect

Portland, Oregon’s ban on plastic bags at major retailers went into effect October 15th, 2011.  In grocery stores throughout the city, consumers will need to bring their own eco friendly reusable bags.  Plastic bags will still be available in the produce sections, but not at check out stands.
The city of Portland wants to remind citizens that if you are purchasing meat products and produce products, it is a good idea to keep the two items seperate to avoid cross contamination.  Reusable shopping bags exclusively for groceries is a sound decision, just make sure that after you have brought in your groceries, you take the recyclable grocery bags back out to the car so that you know you have them available the next time you go shopping.  You may want to make a habit of washing the meats recyclable grocery bags as part of your weekly laundry routine.
According to PsyBlog, it takes 66 days on average to form a habit that no longer requires strong will power to perform.  Citizens of Oregon may have to go through a psycological adjustment period trying to remember to keep reusable shopping bags on hand.  However, at some point, using the reusable shopping bags will become second nature, and people will forget what it was like to bring home all those single use plastic bags they stuffed into drawers and cabinets that ultimately end up in a landfill.  Initially, it may be inconvenient for Oregon citizens to use the reusable shopping bags, but ultimately much better for the health of our planet.  For more information on Portland’s plastic bag ban, go to NWCN.com.
