It is a customary practice in Ukiah Food Bank,California to distribute provisions to community members. But on 24th Oct 2012, wholesale reusable bags were also handed out along with the provisions. Each community member received two reusable totes that were brought by Environmental Club members of Ukiah High School.

Martina Morelli, the co-president of the club said that the mission of the project was to support the city-wide ban on plastic bags. The free bag distribution has ensured the availability of reusable totes to several people who could not have afforded them otherwise.
Claire Morrison, also a co-president, added that the club was motivated to encourage the use of reusable bags. The idea spawned last year under the former president of the Environmental Club, Lindsay Mower. The club had received funds from several sources to acquire and distribute reusable bags.
Mary Anne Landis, a member of the City Council helped Morrison finalize on the distribution sites. Apart from distributing in the Ukiah Food Bank, Environmental Club members also distributed reusable bags in Farmer’s Market and the Alex Rorabaugh Center.
The club’s secretary-treasurer, Nick Frey said that as he belonged to an environmentally sensitive family who believed in eco friendly alternatives, he was always ready to do his bit for the environment. The Environmental Club has a member strength of 30, and they meet on a weekly basis.
