Walla Walla Washington To Host Best Bagger Competition

On October 26, 2011, Walla Walla Washington will be hosting their local Best Bagger Championship, sponsored by the Washington Food Industry Association.  The competition will be held at the Red Lion Hotel at the Park, in Spokane, from 3-5 PM.  The winner of this competition will go on to compete nationally in Las Vegas in February, 2012.  The national championship of the Best Bagger contest is sponsered by the National Grocers Association.

Contestants will be bagging groceries into paper bags and recyclable grocery bags.  Some of the categories contestants will be judged on are speed, distribution of weight, proper bagging technique and style and appearance.  It really does take practice to ensure groceries will be make it home safely in reusable shopping bags, so there are definite strategies involved.  An employee from a local grocers in Walla Walla gives a few pointers such as making sure cans are at the bottom, boxes are used as support, bread and vegetables on the top.

The prize at the regional level is $1,500 for the winner; $1,000 for the runner-up; and $500 for third place. All of the contestants receive $100 for participating.  The registration fee is $50.00 for contestants, but spectators can cheer on their baggers for free.  Spectators are encouraged to attend.

The winner and runner-up from the regional level will then go on to compete at the 26th Annual Best Bagger Competition in Las Vegas, where the grand prize is $10,000. The second-place finisher gets $5,000; and third, fourth and fifth places receive $1,000 each.
