Officials in Philadelphia Promote Eco-friendly Architecture

eco friendlyKeeping in mind the benefits of eco-friendly buildings, the Philadelphia Water Department, in collaboration with the Community Design and the EPA or the U.S Environmental Protection Agency, has decided to host a competition. This competition will focus on novel eco-friendly designs. The competition is titled ‘Infill Philadelphia: Soak It Up!’ The focus of this competition is to find out interesting ways in which the green storm water infrastructure, that is famous in the Philadelphia region, can be used to recreate and improve urban infrastructure.

Infill Philadelphia: Soak It Up! – An interesting competition

The procedures for this competition started in the month of November 2012. Out of all the entries that were sent in for the competition, around nine of them have been finalized. These nine finalists will display their ideas at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University in the coming year. Each of these ideas will be reviewed by an esteemed jury. Out of the nine ideas or proposals, around three will be awarded with a cash prize worth $10,000.

This competition is an exciting opportunity for professionals from different fields to collaborate with each other. Interdisciplinary teams consisting of engineers, architects, landscaping experts, and so on can come together in this competition and display their skills in a creative way. Since the focus of this competition is on the green storm water infrastructure, the professionals need to ensure that they construct their design using this infrastructure.

Focus on encouraging eco friendly promotional items

Another important feature of this competition is the fact that the teams need to design ideas keeping in mind three architectural sites that are present in Philadelphia. The teams can only work on these sites, and they need to encourage the use of eco friendly promotional items through their plan. These three sites include Greening the Grid, Retail Retrofit, and Warehouse Watershed.

Greening the Grid is a neighborhood with a historical relevance, and has a network of open spaces, alleys, streets, and roofs. Keeping this architectural zone in mind, the teams can design many ideas with regard to small-scale engagements. While the Retail Retrofit is a center for retail, the teams can use their ideas to improve the empty spaces in this area. The Warehouse Watershed, on the other hand, is ideal for teams that want to design projects that would mix residential spaces with industrial ones. So the teams can use any of these sites, and make their green building layouts.
