Apple Falls Down in the Greenpeace List

Eco Products The Greenpeace International Guide announces a list of green electronic companies every year. In this year’s list, Apple has fallen 2 spots from rank 4 to rank 6. This list is based on a study that examines the policies used by the companies, focuses on the practices of the firms, and marks them in terms of sustainability.

The Greenpeace officials explain the drop

Greenpeace cited that Apple received a lower score in terms of transparency, specifically in the context of GHG emission reportage, administration of toxic chemicals, recycling of plastic waste, and clean energy support, which caused the 2-spot drop. But given the fact that Apple has a very restricted advertising network, it’s not surprising that it received low points in terms of transparency.

To give out these rankings, Greenpeace conducts a comprehensive study on all leading electronic brands in the world. This research focuses on the commitment and the progress that each firm has made towards green initiatives. These initiatives could be in terms of producing organic products, altering operations to reduce the company’s environmental footprint, or organizing new projects to address environmental issues.

Apple praise its green initiatives and eco friendly promotional items

Even though Apple received lower scores in terms of transparency, the company states that it manufactures products that are more efficient than most other firms. The company website states that Apple products such as Mac Mini are at least six times more efficient than the guidelines provided by the US Environmental Production Agency’s Energy Star.

Greenpeace criticizes the company’s policies

A few months ago, Greenpeace put up a spoof based on Apple’s iCloud application on YouTube. This video spoke about how this phone application impacts the environment and how Apple should consider altering it. The Greenpeace rankings look at the company’s environmental footprint in every aspect, from internet use to physical products, and Apple has received criticism for some of its practices.

Apple received low marks in carrying out sustainable operations and management of their e-waste as well. Greenpeace stated that the company has a poor take-back plan in India and needs to work on it, to try and manage its e-waste better.

The companies that top the Greenpeace list

The companies that superseded Apple in this year’s green list and eco friendly promotional items include Nokia, Acer, Dell and Hewlett-Packard. The first spot was given to an Indian based electronics and outsourcing company, Wipro. Some of the other companies that were placed on the list were Samsung, Philips, Panasonic, RIM, Sony, Lenovo, LG, and Sharp.
