Boston Tries to Curb Usage of Plastic Bottles

Plastic bottles  Boston city officials are taking measures to try and reduce plastic bottle usage within the city limits. To make the city water more accessible to local people, the city councilor, Matt O’ Malley, wants to install water taps around the city. According to him, this system will help reduce the plastic bottle waste that is generated through the purchase of bottled mineral water and will also help in keeping the residents hydrated at all times.

The problems with the current tap water system

The city councilor, O’ Malley, feels that compared to other cities, Boston has a limited number of water taps spread around the city. As a result, tourists, walkers, and runners prefer to buy bottled mineral water instead of looking for water taps. According to a survey, American residents buy a minimum of 3.4 billion bottles of packaged drinking water a year, out of which 90 percent are sent to the municipal bodies, to be disposed into landfills. So, in an effort to reduce their environmental footprint, the city council is looking forward to make changes in their tap water system.

Combating water issues and encouraging eco friendly promotional items

To combat the tap water problem within the city, O’Malley filed a hearing request in the court. This request highlighted how there are very few drinking water taps in public places in Boston and how the city needs to work on increasing its tap water resources. According to him, the city needs to initiate programs to set up new water taps around the city. These taps need to be located in public places where residents can easily access them. So, through this system, the city council will be promoting an eco friendly lifestyle by saving up on waste plastic bottles, and they will also be helping the residents save up on money that they spend on bottled water everyday.

Using the system to promote a healthier lifestyle

In a recent survey conducted in the city, it was found that obesity levels are on a rise in Boston. The officials feel that the new tap water system will help combat this unhealthy lifestyle issue as well. If water taps are well-spread in public buildings and offices, people will walk to the taps to fetch water. This will give them some amount of physical exercise. Additionally, they may start reusing plastic bottles by filling them up with tap water. So, this system will not only promote the usage of eco friendly promotional items but will also help residents of Boston change their unhealthy lifestyle.
