Chicago Aldermen Looking To Ban Plastic Bags

Jute reusable bagsThe city of Chicago is comprised of 50 wards or legislative districts. Each ward elects one Alderman. The 50 Aldermen comprise Chicago’s City Council, who along with the Mayor of Chicago, govern the city.  Joe Mareno, Chicago Alderman of the First Ward, wants to ban plastic bags in Chicago.

The city of Chicago currently requires businesses to give customers the opportunity to recycle their plastic bags, but Moreno does feel that law is accomplishing enough.

Under Moreno’s proposal, stores larger than 5,000 square feet “must provide resuable bags to customers, either for sale or at no charge.”   Stores that continue to hand out plastic bags woulf face finds of $150 to $250 a day and stores that do not offer reusable bags could be fined $50 to $150 a day.

Reusable shopping bags can be made of 100% biodegradable material such as Jute or Bamboo or recycled plastic, but either way, the reusable bags will last for years with regular use, as opposed to being used 1 time.

Consumers are becoming more aware of the importance of washing reusable shopping bags to keep bacteria from forming, and storing them in places that are easy to access them.  Keeping some eco friendly reusable bags in your car, or in your desk at work, are a couple of ways to make sure you always have a bag on hand.
