Greensboro City Officials Promote Recycling Among the Residents

recyclingThe city council of Greensboro is starting off the year with a new recycling campaign named “Recycle More, Save More.” This campaign has been introduced to alleviate the level of recycling among the residents of the city. According to Sheldon Smith, the Manager at the Solid Waste Division in the city, residents will be able to dispose more items in the recycling carts with the implementation of this new program. Therefore, they will be motivated to recycle more.

The new recycling program introduced by the city officials

In the previous years, the residents could only dispose selected items into the recycling carts. With the implementation of this new campaign, they will be able to dispose items such as pizza boxes, juice and milk cartons, and plastic containers that are used to package food items in the recycling carts. According to Sheldon, the biggest advantage of this campaign is the fact that it will enable residents to dispose plastic into the recycling carts. Plastic waste is the biggest concern in terms of waste generation. By recycling plastic waste, the city will be able to curb the waste disposal issue to a large extent.

Sheldon states that the new campaign will increase the recycling charges for the residents, as they will have to pay a certain amount of money to get these additional items recycled. However, in the long run it will benefit them as well. This is because if the residents recycle most of their waste, the city council will be able to save money on their waste disposal operations. This additional money will be invested on the amenities made available within the city and on other developmental projects that will benefit the residents in the long run.

The contract to encourage eco friendly promotional items

For the recycling campaign to take effect, Greensboro officials have signed a contract with a firm named ReCommunity. This contract will continue for a period of 5 years. According to the contract, the city council will save up on approximately one million dollars, as they will not incur any costs with regard to residue fees or processing fees.

In the year 2012, Greensboro recycled close to 30,000 tons of waste. With the implementation of this new system, the officials are hoping that the city’s recycling rates will go up steadily. The officials are also hoping that the consumption of eco friendly promotional items will increase along with the rise in recycling rates in the city.
