Simple Food for Memorial Day

Planning your Memorial Day feast should start with simple foods. Grab some zip top bags and a few ingredients for a quick marinade:

  • Balsamic
  • Thyme
  • Rosemary
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Lemon juice

Let all your proteins sit in the fridge for at least an hour before you start grilling. Also, remember that you can baste the meat with the marinading liquid throughout the grilling process. So, instead of grilling for, say, five minutes on each side, flip every two minutes and baste each time until you reach a total of ten minutes.

You can also grill vegetables with a pouch of aluminum foil and:

  • Any vegetables you like from potatoes and onions to broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and parsnips
  • A little beef stock
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • a dash of lime juice

Close the pouch and allow the vegetables to steam while you grill. The steam will keep the veggies moist and allow the seasonings to activate.

A Few Drinks, Too

There are a few things you do to make Memorial Day as fun as possible when hydrating your guests. For the kids, try Shirley Temples and a Roy Rogers. A Shirley Temple is just clear soda with cherries and grenadine. A Roy Rogers, conversely, is any dark cola and cherries with grenadine.

For the adults, try a BayBreeze with coconut rum, pineapple juice, and cranberry juice. If you want something simpler, try the classic banana rum and orange juice. As always, keep some waters around so everyone can cool off before they go home.
