Seattle, Washington Embraces Reusable Grocery Bags

bamboo reusable shopping bagThe Seattle City Council voted yesterday to ban single use plastic bags from grocery stores and other retail stores, and charge a .5 cent fee on paper bags.  The ordinance goes into affect July, 2012.  Low income residents that can not afford the .5 fee for paper bags, who can verify eligibility in a food assistance program will not be charged the paper bag fee.

Other Washington cities that have also passed single use plastic bag bans are Mukilteo, Edmonds, Bellingham and Portland.

Using reusable grocery bags are much better for the environment.  You can find reusable shopping bags made of materials that don’t harm the environment during production and don’t need to be discarded after each use which reduces waste.  Reusable grocery bags will be available for sale at check out at all local grocers as well as retail stores.

Eco friendly bags can be used hundreds of times and some are even made out of 100% biodegradable products such as jute, bamboo and cotton.  These materials are very durable, can handle carrying heavy loads such as gallon milk cartons or laundry detergent and are washable.  The benefits to grocers and other retail stores are that reusable shopping bags can be customized for brand recognition.
