The Bloomberg Philanthropies Contest to Deal with Civic Issues

Recycling The Bloomberg Philanthropies organization has come up with a very interesting and challenging contest to help people deal with civic problems in their cities.

The contest, which is open to all 305 states in the nation, will help the winning states to implement their creative solutions for an existing national problem, by providing them with financial help.

This competition has been split into two stages. In the first stage, which is already over, 20 states with the best proposals were shortlisted by the organization. These 20 chosen states are the finalists of the competition. Now that the states have been shortlisted, their proposals will be discussed in detail and the organization will pick the best one out of them. These 20 states are now waiting to compete for a grant of $5 million dollars in the finals.

Houston’s proposal of a mega-recycling plant

Houston is among the top 20 finalists in this competition. The state has proposed a plan for a megarecycling plant and is hoping to win the grant to address the issue of waste disposal within the city. The proposal is named “Total – Reuse – One Bin for All” and through this idea, the city is aiming at recycling more than 75 percent of its residential waste.

According to this plan, the residents would dispose their residential waste in one trash can without segregating it, and the actual segregation would take place at the recycling unit. This plan, if put into action, could help build the first total material resource recovery facility in the U.S. So, this plan would not only take care of the issue of garbage disposal within the city but also help recycle all waste materials into ecofriendly promotional items.

The final result and how it will help in the production of eco-friendly promotional items

Bloomberg Philanthropies will announce the winner of the competition in spring. The organization has invited many city officials for a twoday conference in New York. During this conference, the organization plans to discuss proposals put forth by the experts and find out the feasibility of each proposal. Once the proposals have been discussed and adjudged based on all the relevant criteria, the organization will choose the winner and will help it turn its proposal into reality.

Even though the organization will award the grant of $5 million to only one winning group,  they have planned to try and incorporate all the final ideas into a mega project. If such a plan is implemented, then the issue of waste disposal in the U.S. could be handled in a more organized way. This is also expected to boost the production and sales of ecofriendly promotional items produced from the recycled wastes.
