Paper plates are useful during parties, and while eating outdoors. When you do not have the time to wash dishes, paper plates will be very useful. You need not even worry about having to add paper to landfills, because the paper plates you have now can be a part of your compost pile.
Paper plates can be perfect for a barbecue party without hassles. However, consumer reports increasingly favor the plates that break easily. Due to various consumer reports different paper plates were tested for their eco-friendly qualities. The two plates subjected to these tests were Hefty Basic and Chinet Classic plates. The claims made on behalf of these two plates are mentioned below.
What is special about these paper plates?
It is the claim of Hefty that their plates are ideal for home composting. They are biodegradable. Chinet claims that their plates are eco friendly. They can be easily composted as they use recycled material in their production. The two varieties of plates were tested at the headquarters of Consumer Reports by Bernie Deitrick, who is a tester.
According to Bernie, he put each of the two plates separately in a compost bin. He noted the progress each week. In addition to these two plates, the Consumer Reports put to test two different types of regular plates at a company picnic. The two regular paper plates selected for comparison were America’s Choice and Dixie Ultra.
In addition to these tests, there was a chili test too. Deitrick conducted the chili test. A cup of chili was scooped over each plate. The plates were then left in the lab over a counter. The purpose of this test was to see if the paper could sustain chili. The chili didn’t leak, and Dixie Ultra was the driest.
As for the composting test, it took three weeks for the Hefty plates to disintegrate and five weeks for Chinet. The regular plates broke down in about three months. In other words, the Hefty and Chinet plates were better.
Need for eco friendly promotional items
There is the urgent need for eco friendly promotional items to make the planet we live on sustainable. It takes very long for non eco-friendly items to disintegrate. Those items that do not break down easily pollute the earth, its soil, as well as the water resources. While paper is considered an eco friendly item, there are various types of papers and the not very eco friendly among them can take a long time to disintegrate while the eco friendly paper disintegrates faster.
So everyone should ensure to use eco friendly items that disintegrate faster. The papers that cannot be composted easily go into the landfills where they remain in the original state for long.
