Free Reusable Bags In Santa Cruz December 15th

On Thursday, December 15th, 2011, Save Our Shores will host “Bring You Own Bag” day in Santa Cruz County.  John Leopold, Santa Cruz County Supervisor, will hand out custom reusable bags from 4-6pm at Mi Pueblo market in Watsonville, theCapitola Mall, Live Oak Market, Scotts Valley Market, and Kmart in ScottsValley.   John Leopold is personally going to encourage the use of reusable grocery bags to reduce plastic waste through out the community.

Safeway, New Leaf Community Markets, Whole Foods Markets on Soquel Avenue and 41st Avenue will hand out reusable grocery bags as well.  Charlie Hong Kong, Staples, Best Buy, SaveMart, and Macy’s will also participate, making this a community wide effort supported by retailers large and small.

Save Our Shores has partnered with the Cities of Capitola, Scotts Valley, Santa Cruz, Watsonville, the County of Santa Cruz, and Green Waste to host the county wide reusable shopping bag giveaway.

Using recyclable grocery bags rather than single use plastic bags or paper bags is better for the environment as they can be used over and over again.  Some eco friendly shopping bags are made of 100% biodegradable materials such as Jute or Bamboo, but even plastic reusable shopping bags are recyclable, and can last for years with regular washing.
