An event known as “Weed Dating” will be held on June 30 at an organic farm near Auxvasse. This is going to be a unique group date in which organic activists and young farmers will get to know one another while gardening. The event will begin at 5:30 in the evening. Apart from the tour of the farm, daters will get a chance to mix with each other.
What is ‘Weed Dating’?
This is a unique group date in Callaway County. The daters will take a tour around the farm. Then they will weed vegetables while mingling with workers opposite them. A group of daters will go from plant to plant rotating, until they meet every one. This will be followed by a reception.
Hannah Hemmelgarn, Laughing Oak Folk School organizer is enthusiastic about the event. This organization holds social events and folk-wisdom workshops at several locations within Central Missouri and is also sponsoring weed dating. The event promises to fulfill the needs of young people, according to Hemmelgarn, interested in permaculture and gardening who find it difficult to come across people with similar interests.
The source of inspiration for Hemmelgarn was a similar event that took place in St Louis. Hemmelgarn then decided to bring it to this County. The concept of “Weed Dating” however should be credited to a non-profit young farmers’ organization known as the Greenhorns. This free event is not only for single people but open to all.
According to Hemmelgarn, young farmers will get an opportunity to partner with some one like-minded and will benefit the group collectively. Hemmelgarn looks forward to diversity in sexual orientation, gender, and age.
The event requires registration for the right pairing to take place. So, name, gender, sexual orientation, and age must be given at the time of registration. Registration for the event can be done either on their Facebook page or their website “Weed Dating at Deep Mud Farm”.

Weed dating is a new concept which along with other eco friendly promotional items can create large scale awareness on environmental issues. So, it is important that these innovative ideas are supported and promoted. Additionally, it would be a fun way of learning and working in favor of organics.
At the community level, there are several innovative projects on recycling already going on, but “Weed Dating” is a unique concept that will draw the attention of everyone including singles. By making the event free for everyone irrespective of their age and gender, the event will prove immensely valuable for those who choose to attend the event.
